Tom Szaky and Jon Beyer founded it in 2001 as a waste management company. It makes consumer products from pre-consumer and post-consumer waste and by reusing other waste materials. The company is known for its environmentally friendly aspects. TerraCycle’s “Brigade” programs enable individuals or groups to collect specified waste materials in exchange for donations to a selected cause or school.  Users sign up over the Internet, and shipping and a sponsoring company related to the specified Brigade generally covers donation costs. The waste materials, typically non-recyclable, are either refurbished, up cycled, or recycled.
